Goodbye Wellington. Time to
soldier on to Napier via The Waiarapa
It was a
bit of a nasty day, good to travel in though.
After a pit
stop at The Naenae Pharmacy, my secret supplier of the essence that enhances my
Grandma’s Tomato Sauce. Thank you Anne Duncan
Nice to
meet Paul, he has been my saviour. It is a very old recipe and hardly any
pharmacist still have the formula.
All
essenced up, it was onto to the Rimutakas. This also used to be a shocker of a
road. I hated it when I was young. But like most of the roads in the North
Island It is pie of cake really. In good conditions like we were travelling. I
can’t understand why there are accidents. There warnings galore of up coming bends
with recommended speeds. Plenty of passing lanes. Enough for it not to be too
tedious when stuck behind a logging truck
Anyway the truckies
seem to be very considerate
But first I
spied the Kaitoke Reservoir. Wow they are making a second one it seems
A really
pretty walk into the viewing platform and then this vast pond,
I think it
serves most of Lower Hutt
They are building a new one
Of course
the stomach was calling for lunch. Greytown is a Famous Village.
I was hoping for a nice little pie and sandwich.
We perused
the menu and saw Venison Pie with Mash and Gravy
Well I was
sucked in immediately. Dale was very taken with the Fish Pie
OMG it was
one of the best pies I’ve had in a while
It sat on a
bed of super smooth mash with a little pond of the best bloody gravy I have had
in a while.
Top Marks
to The Main Street
Deli. Great Food, coffee, service.
Worth a
visit
So onto to
Carterton, just stopped there for the Photo Op. What a pretty little town.
Flowers every where Liked that.
Eketehuna,
great name, used a bit like Timbucktoo.
Not much
there but I did like their Toilet block.
Mangatainoka
Now here is
an NZ Icon. The Tui Brewery
It
dominates the area and according to their website gets about 40,000 visits per
year.
Famous for
their Yeah Right Bill Boards
Some very
clever
Quick off
the mark with Mr Armstrong!
Now the
drive was getting a little tedious and I think the late nights were beginning
to show on this driver, so we stopped for afternoon tea in Waipukarau
And what
did we find but the Angkor Wat Café
A major
winner in the NZ Pie Awards.
Our friend
Catherine, The PR Queen, who worked alongside us, for about 20 years, was very involved
in making sure these awards got top publicity, over the last 15 years.
Very
successful
We got to
eat some of the rejects during the judging. Excellent
She has retired
from that job now. Mind you so have we…(hence the roads trips) so no more
testing the leftovers
Pity. They
were yummy
So we
didn’t eat a pie, bit hard to beat Main Street Deli’s Venison Pie,
but we did
partake of an Afghan Cookie and coffee.
Very good
So now
awake, we carried on. Goodness it is dry here in Hawkes Bay
But there are lots of gems like this Colonial House, dotted all over the place
By chance I
noted that we were coming up for the 1000K mark on this trip
So here is
the landmark. 1000K nearly to Napier via Taupo, Bunnythorpe, Wellington, The Waiarapa.
Nice field
of Cattle feed it looks like
Unfortunately
the camera died so it was Goodbye to Photos till our arrival
in Napier.
